Yard Waste FAQ's

Yard Waste accounts for almost 20% of what we throw away in Gillette. When you sort out your Yard Waste, that material will be made into compost that can be used to improve the quality of your soil.

  • How to do I get a Yard Waste roll-out?
    Either stop by City Hall or call Customer Service (307) 686-5206
     
  • When do I get my roll-out for Yard Waste?
    You will receive your Yard Waste roll-out sometime this spring, most likely mid-April. Please sign up for e-Notices on the City’s web site www.gillettewy.gov to receive up-to-date information.
     
  • Are there serial numbers on the Yard Waste Roll-outs?
    Yes, there is a number on the roll-out that will be assigned to you.
     
  • Do I have to get a yard waste roll-out?
    No, the program is voluntary. You can call Customer Service (307) 686-5206 if you wish to receive a roll-out.
     
  • Do I have to pay for the service?
    Yes, the fee for curbside collection of yard waste is $9.60 per month per roll-out (for 8 months: April thru November).
     
  • Can’t I just put my yard waste in a plastic bag?
    No, bags are not accepted in the program. Please do not place bagged material in the yard waste roll-out.
     
  • What can I put in the Yard Waste Roll-Out?
    Yes: Grass clippings, leaves, and woody materials (limbs, brush, & branches)
    No: Sod, dirt, or sand
     
  • What can I put in the Yard Waste Roll-Out?
    Yes: limbs and branches- 2 inches in diameter and 36 inches long
    No: limbs or branches larger than 2 inches in diameter and 36 inches long

    Yes: Loose material
    No: Bagged material
     
  • Is there a size limit?
    Yes, trimmings and branches can be no larger than 2 inches in diameter and no longer than 36 inches. The lid of the container must be able to close.
     
  • How much can I put in the Yard Waste roll-out?
    The maximum weight of the container cannot exceed 300 pounds.
     
  • Can I have more than 1 Yard Waste roll-out?
    Yes, you’ll just have to pay an extra fee (example: 2 roll-outs X $9.60= $19.20 per month).
     
  • When is my pick up day?
    Pick up days for Yard Waste will be the same day as your trash pickup.  
  • What should I do if I have a missed pick up?
     Call the Solid Waste Division (307) 686-5279
     
  • What if I need an extra pick up?
    Call Customer Service (307) 686-5206 and we will schedule an extra pick up. There will be a $9.60 fee for each extra pick up.
     
  • Can I buy compost?
    Yes, the City of Gillette sells Stonepile Select Compost and Yard waste compost. 
  • How do I buy compost?
    You can purchase compost at the Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 3101 S. Garner Lake Road 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. 
     
  • What are the hours of the Drop-Off site?
    7 Days a Week, 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Where is the Drop-Off site?
    The City of Gillette’s Yard Waste Drop-Off site which is adjacent to the Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 3101 S. Garner Lake Road.
     
  • What should I do with my Yard Waste roll-out during the winter?
    Please clean and rinse out your roll-out then store your roll-out in a safe place for next season.
     
  • What is Grass-Cycling?
    The City of Gillette advocates "grasscycling," or letting grass clippings decompose into the lawn. This saves time, energy, and water, and reduces the need for fertilizers and pesticides.
