The Streets Division maintains over 464 lane miles of City streets. Street maintenance includes patching potholes, sweeping and overseeing small patches in roadways and sidewalks. The Division mows and sprays for weeds on approximately 702 acres of right-of-way including shoulders, detention basins, dead end streets, fence lines, and other pieces of city owned property. They also maintain 49 dewatering wells. Other duties include assisting the Mayor’s Art Council with placing statues and setting pedestals, setting up and cleaning statues and the set up and tear down for various special events. Streets assist the Police Department with traffic control during parades, and responds to assist in emergencies such as traffic accident clean up and removing road hazards. The division performs snow & ice control during the winter. The Streets Division oversees large cleanup efforts like the 2013 Atlas Storm to ensure streets are clear of debris and are safe for travel.
Prior to a snow event, the entire division is on alert to be called out if needed to plow and apply material to roads. After a snow event, the Streets Division performs cleanup efforts, such as removing large snow piles from the downtown area. During heavy rains, crews may also be called out to open drains plugged by debris or close flooded roads. Personnel in the Streets Division consist of one Streets Supervisor, two crew leaders and 13 full time employees. There is a Streets operator on call 24 hours a day. In case of an emergency after hours, please call the Gillette Police Department at 682-5155 and they will contact the on-call person.
