Public Works Administration
The Public Works Administration provides leadership and management to the Public Works Department, which consists of Five divisions: Parks Division (including Forestry), Facilities Maintenance, Streets Division, Solid Waste and Vehicle Maintenance Division.
The Public Works Director leads a staff of approximately 41 full-time personnel, plus an average of 40 seasonal staff in the summer. The Public Works Department is responsible for City streets, sidewalks, storm drainage, right-of-way mowing, parks trees, bike and pedestrian pathways, residential trash pickup and recycling.
The Administration Division is responsible for budgeting, policy development, and oversight of the entire department. The division provides reports to City Administration, City Council, and ensures the Council’s directives are carried out while providing the highest level of customer service to the citizens of Gillette. The Administration Division is comprised of a Director, Operations Manager, Senior Administrative Assistant, and a Administrative Assistant, who provide administrative support to the department.
The Parks crew plans, develops, and maintains over 40 City parks & beautification areas. This division also manages the Adopt-a-Planter program. The City Arborist manages the Urban Forestry program. The Parks Superintendent serves as staff liaison for the Parks & Beautification Board.
The Facilities Maintenance Division manages the maintenance and upkeep of City Hall, City West, as well as other City facilities. The division also includes the custodial staff that is responsible for cleaning City Hall, City West, Animal Control, Purchasing/Warehouse as well as the Wastewater facility. During the winter months, snow removal for City Hall sidewalks is also provided by the Facilities Maintenance Manager.
The Streets crew maintains City streets, which includes patching potholes, sweeping streets, de-watering wells, cleaning drainage systems, mowing rights-of-way, and snow & ice control during winter.
The Solid Waste crew manages all residential trash needs within City limits and the summer Yard Waste program.
The City's ASE-certified technicians maintain a fleet of 250 vehicles, including patrol cars, street sweepers, snow plows, front end loaders, backhoes, bucket trucks and more, as well as more than 281 pieces of small equipment.
The division is automated which allows for preventive maintenance scheduling, maintenance requests, work order history, vehicle and equipment costs, parts inventory and replacement analysis.
The Fleet Manager also manages the City’s overall vehicle depreciation and replacement program. In addition, the Fire Department’s replacement program is managed here as well.
